My Story

Phoenix Freedom Wigs is built on lived experience. I am not only your consultant — I am also a Freedom Wig wearer. My journey with permanent hair loss has shaped everything about the way I support clients today.

For many years, I wore traditional wigs that never truly felt comfortable or secure. They often caused irritation, felt heavy, or made me constantly aware that I was wearing something that didn’t feel like me. I understand what it’s like to feel restless, to worry about how a wig looks in the wind, or to just want to get home so you can take it off.

When I discovered Freedom Wigs, everything changed. For the first time, I experienced what it felt like to move through daily life without fear or discomfort — to feel natural, secure, and at ease. That sense of freedom is something I believe everyone facing hair loss deserves the opportunity to experience.

The name Phoenix was chosen with intention. The phoenix is a symbol of transformation — of rising, renewed, from life’s most difficult moments. While complete hair loss can feel devastating, it can also become a turning point. A chance to rebuild confidence, to redefine strength, and to step forward with a renewed sense of self.

Having lived through the emotional, practical, and sensory challenges of permanent hair loss myself, supporting others on this journey is deeply personal. My goal is to provide not just a solution, but a safe and understanding space where you can explore your options with dignity, care, and confidence.

Phoenix Freedom Wigs exists to help you rise into this next chapter — feeling comfortable, natural, and truly yourself again.

Thier Story

Freedom Wigs Ltd (formerly Barrington Studios) was previously owned and operated by Murray and Averill Barrington. With over 25 years experience in the wig-making business, their expertise and innovation were second to none.
Located in Dunedin, New Zealand, Freedom Wigs comprises a team of over 45 people. The production staff are each specialists in their field of the manufacturing process, be it hair grading, blending, implantation or mould making. All staff are dedicated to quality, customer service and ongoing product development.
Freedom Wigs is always building on its network of dealer representatives (the majority of whom are delighted customers turned agents) to help ensure its prosthetic wigs are available throughout the world.

The business began back in 1977 when Murray made men's toupees in a spare room at home. Eleven years later he began creating full cap prosthetic hairpieces for women and men with alopecia areata, totalis, universalis and androgenic. Wanting to give customers the benefit of vacuum cap security without the use of tapes or adhesives, Murray and Averill oversaw extensive research and development, resulting in Freedom Hair's permeable silicone caps. Since then, hundreds of men and women throughout the world have discovered new-found confidence and freedom.

Today, Freedom Wigs carries not only decades of technical expertise, but also a deeply personal understanding of hair loss. The company is now owned by Gary and Deanna, who took over the business ten years ago following Murray and Averill’s retirement. Deanna’s journey with Freedom began long before ownership — she worked in the business for 12 years prior, after being introduced to Murray and Averill when her daughter, Libby experienced hair loss and received her first wig at just 12 years old. This personal connection to alopecia brings an added layer of empathy, care, and lived understanding to everything Freedom Wigs creates, strengthening its commitment to helping clients regain confidence with dignity and support.
